BOSTON — Basketball player Enes Kanter is now Enes Kanter Freedom.
The Boston Celtics center was sworn in as a U.S. citizen Monday, posting the video of the ceremony to Twitter.
Enes Kanter then announced he had changed his name to Enes Kanter Freedom to celebrate his new citizenship, telling WFXT: “America taught me so much, here people should be blessed. You have freedom of speech, freedom of the press and I want to carry that word with me everywhere I go.”
Kanter Freedom then posted a picture online celebrating his official name change, showing off his new jersey featuring the name “Freedom”.
Kanter Freedom, who was born in Switzerland but was raised in Turkey, previously wore the word “Freedom” on his jersey during the 2019-2020 season when the NBA allowed players to replace the names on their jerseys with social justice messages, NBA.com reported.
