Border agents find $21M worth of fentanyl pills in shipment of green beans

OTAY MESA, Calif. — United States Customs and Border Protection officers found nearly 800 pounds of fentanyl pills worth more than $21 million inside a shipment of green beans in California.

In a news release, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said officers at the Otay Mesa port in California inspected a tractor-trailer of green beans driven by a 48-year-old man. According to the news release, the examination found “irregularities.”

Officers then requested assistance with narcotic detectors, including a K9. The inspection found more than 300 packages of fentanyl pills, worth about $21,120,000, according to CBS News.

“We’re spilling the beans,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in the news release.

“CBP recognizes our officers’ exceptional performance and applaud their continued efforts to protect and serve our communities,” said Rosa Hernandez, Port Director for the Otay Mesa Cargo Facility in the news release. “This seizure provides insight and displays how our officers work together in collaboration to keep this dangerous drug off the streets.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the driver has been turned over to the custody of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
