HONOLULU — At least 36 people were injured,11 were seriously, after a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix to Honolulu hit severe turbulence.

The severe turbulence occurred about 30 minutes before the plane was to land in Honolulu on Sunday, according to KHNL. Some passengers were reportedly sent flying out of their seats, including one passenger who hit the ceiling.

In a statement from Honolulu Emergency Medical Services obtained by The Associated Press, a call came in around 11 a.m. Sunday saying first responders treated about 36 patients. Twnety of those patients were transported for additional medical treatment. Eleven people were in serious condition and nine were reportedly in stable condition.

Passengers were treated by paramedics and emergency technicians for injuries including serious head injuries, cuts, bruises and loss of consciousness, according to KHNL.

Hawaiian Airlines released a statement, according to the AP, and said that 13 passengers and three crew members were taken to the hospital for additional care. Hawaiian Airlines said that the plane was carrying 278 passengers and 10 crew members. It also said they landed safely just before 11 a.m.

According to the AP, the differing numbers of injuries “could not immediately be reconciled.”

No further information has been released.
