1 dead, 1 injured in domestic dispute at Florida Air Force base

One person was killed and another was hospitalized after a domestic dispute led to gunfire at a Florida Air Force base, authorities said Friday.

The shooting occurred at Hurlburt Field, located on Florida’s Panhandle and headquarters of Air Force Special Operations Command, the Northwest Florida Daily News reported.

The base was locked down for several hours late Friday afternoon, the newspaper reported.

The identity of the person who died has been withheld pending notification of next of kin, WEAR-TV reported. The injured person was taken to an area hospital, according to an Air Force spokesperson.

According to 2nd Lt. Janell Venerable, public information officer for the 1st Special Operations Wing, the incident began about 4:30 p.m. CDT. Base security forces responded and were joined by local civilian law-enforcement personnel, Venerable said.

The lockdown was lifted at 7:13 p.m. local time, WKRG reported.

Michele Nicholson, public information officer for the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, said the office’s special response team and its crisis negotiation unit responded to the disturbance, the Daily News reported.

Col. Jocelyn Schermerhorn, commander of the 1st SOW, used her Facebook page to express her condolences.

“My condolences go out to all affected by this senseless tragedy,” Schermerhorn wrote. “The 1st Special Operations Wing does not condone domestic violence. We constantly work to mitigate this needless violence through our on-base resources and programs that are offered to all Hurlburt Field members.”
