State Rep. Proposes Gondolas For Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. — A new proposal could make overhead gondolas part of Central Florida's mass transportation system.

State Representative Darren Soto of Orlando, and Orange County Commissioner Linda Stewart just returned from a trip to Colombia to see its gondola system.

Once the SunRail is completed from Volusia County to Osceola County in 2010, gondola lines could be set up to help commuters go east and west to areas like Orlando International Airport, Soto said.

The proposal would put gondola routes from I-4 to State Road 417, along State Road 50, State Road 408 and State Road 528.

The enclosed gondolas could carry eight to ten passengers each and would travel above ground at about 30 miles per hour, officials said.

Soto said the project could cost anywhere from $20 million to $100 million.
