MIRAMAR, Fla. — Miramar-based Spirit Airlines has notified the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity of plans to temporarily furlough nearly 1,000 Florida employees.

In a letter dated August 1, Spirit officials say they’ll be issuing furloughs by inverse seniority, effective October 1.

The company includes the COVID-19 pandemic in a list of “unforeseeable business circumstances” making the furloughs necessary.

They will mostly affect employees at Spirit’s crew base at the Fort Lauderdale International Airport, including 571 flight attendants and 275 co-pilots.

The letter says they also expect to furlough 100 service agents at the Fort Lauderdale airport, and 30 employees at their Operations Control Center in Miramar.
