ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — There are more female lawmakers at the local and federal levels than ever before.
The achievement of Vice President Kamala Harris reaching the second-highest office in the U.S. was celebrated Wednesday both in Washington and across the country, including Central Florida.
A UCF professor Terri Fine said that seeing women in power and seeing them empowered helps pave the path for the next generation to see historic achievements as ordinary.
“When we see ourselves in government, then that means that government is closer to the people. And it’s going to function much better,” Fine said.

Many women were wearing their pearls and Chucks, symbols of Harris’ election. Others wore T-shirts bluntly stating, “My VP looks like me.”
“It almost gives me chills,” Jasmine Burey-Clark said.
