ORLANDO, Fla. — The first day back to school for students in Orange County is Aug. 10, which means it’s time for families to get those school essentials.

Several Central Florida organizations held back-to-school events on Saturday, including the YMCA of Central Florida.

The events helped to provide a bit of relief to families as costs for back-to-school items are higher than they have been in years.

“I feel like the summer has been short,” said 10-year-old Nathaniel Rowe.
Rowe is about to be a fifth grader and two months off for the summer was enough time.

As Rowe gets ready to return to the classroom in a little over a week, his grandmother is working to check off all the items on his back-to-school supply list.
The are one of many families who stopped by the YMCA on Saturday morning, hoping to get that head start.
In addition to free backpacks and other school supplies, the YMCA events also featured free haircuts, prize giveaways, games, music and additional parental resources.
