WINTER PARK, Fla. — A Winter Park police sergeant was arrested after deputies say he allegedly stole the belongings of a dead person during a death investigation in 2011, the Winter Park Police Department said.

According to an arrest affidavit, Frank Cowart took $101 from a wallet found during the 2011 death investigation.
Four years later, his wife reported the theft while the pair were divorcing, but investigators could not prove the claim, the affidavit states.

Then earlier this year, after the couple parted ways, the former wife reported Cowart left behind boxes that investigators found evidence tying Cowart to the theft, the affidavit states.
The Winter Park Police Department became aware of the allegations on March 13 and asked the Orange County Sheriff’s Office to conduct a criminal investigation.

That criminal investigation resulted in Cowart’s arrest Friday on a charge of grand theft, the police department said.
Cowart has worked at the police department since 2002. He was assigned to the criminal investigations division at the time the allegations were made.

Cowart was placed on administrative leave until completion of an internal affairs investigation by the Winter Park Police Department.
