President Biden commutes sentences of 37 federal death row inmates

WASHINGTON — The White House announced Monday that President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of 37 of the 40 people who are on federal death row.

The president will convert their punishments to life imprisonment.

It comes just weeks before president-elect Donald Trump, who is an outspoken proponent of expanding capital punishment, takes office.

Only three federal inmates are still facing execution.

They include Dylann Roof, who killed nine black members of a church in South Carolina, one of the Boston Marathon bombers, and Robert Bowers, who killed 11 people at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue in 2018.
