Red Cross, fire department Sound the Alarm for fire safety

SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. — Home fire safety is a critical part of reducing home fire-related deaths and injuries and on Saturday, the American Red Cross of Central Florida continued its Home Fire Prevention campaign called “Sound the Alarm” in South Daytona.

Red Cross volunteers and the South Daytona Fire Department teamed up to install free smoke alarms in homes that do not have them and educate people about home fire safety.

Going door-to-door, volunteers provided safety education and shared information on the causes of home fires, what to do if a fire starts and how to create an escape plan.

Volunteers and members of the fire department also installed smoke alarms throughout the community.

Red Cross, fire department Sound the Alarm for fire safety

The national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign launched in October 2014.

According to a news release, through December 2022, the campaign has helped save at least 1,505 lives. Nationwide, more than 2.4 million free smoke alarms have been installed, making more than 1 million homes safer.

The American Red Cross responds to a disaster every 8 minutes with the vast majority being home fires, claiming 7 lives every day.

Having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half.
