DELTONA, Fla. — Deputies in Volusia County are investigating a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a pregnant woman and her passenger.

The crash occurred at around 11:20 p.m. Saturday night at Howland Boulevard and Forest Edge Drive, near Deltona High School.
Deputies said the victims were going west on Howland Boulevard when a speeding driver in a silver 2020 Kia Optima slammed into the back of their car.
Investigators said the impact of the crash caused the victims’ vehicle to travel more than 300 feet before coming to a stop.

Deputies said the driver of the Kia Optima ran away from the scene, leaving the damaged car behind.
The pregnant woman suffered serious injuries, and her passenger, the father of her unborn child, suffered critical, life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Deputies said the victims were taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where the woman was listed in serious but stable condition, and the man was critical and unstable.
Investigators said the suspect’s vehicle was a rental car, and detectives have been working throughout the weekend to identify the driver.
