DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A Volusia County judge sent an Embry-Riddle student accused of plotting a mass shooting at the university back to his jail cell to await trial.
Police said 19-year-old John Hagins planned to carry out the shooting on the final day before winter break when the campus would be full of students.

In court Tuesday, state prosecutors laid out all the reasons they say he shouldn’t be allowed out on bond, including sharing video of Hagins firing the gun they believe he planned on using in the attack.
The state portrayed that as video of a man practicing his plans to carry out a mass shooting, while the defense said it’s just video of a teen excited about a gun he legally purchased.

Detectives said friends became concerned over the teen’s behavior after he was accused of inappropriately touching a student last year and cleared.
Friends told police Hagins’ grades began dropping and that he became obsessed with buying a gun he could fit in his backpack.

Hagins is using George Zimmerman’s former attorney Mark O’Mara who argued Hagins purchased the gun legally and that, while he may have made bad jokes, he never intended to carry out any kind of shooting.
Hagins’ mom was in court but did not want to comment.
Officials said Hagins has no criminal record and is currently suspended from Embry-Riddle.
