Foul play suspected in death of man whose remains were found by off-roader in woods near I-4

DELAND, Fla. — Police said Monday that they hope an autopsy will help them identify the remains of a man that were found in woods Saturday night near Interstate 4 in DeLand.

DeLand police Chief Jason Umberger said someone who was off-duty medic was off-roading near West MacKenzie Road and North Summit Avenue called 911 just before 11 p.m. Saturday to report the discovery of a human skull.

Investigators found the remains of a white man of an unknown age. He said that description does not currently match any missing, Umberger said.

He said evidence found near the body led them to believe the man’s death was a homicide. He did not elaborate on what evidence was found.

The area where the remains were discovered is private owned and near a former homeless camp, Umberger said.
