First shark bite of the year reported in Volusia County

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A fisherman earned the undesired title of first shark bite victim of the year on Wednesday in Volusia County.

Volusia County Beach Safety said the 21-year-old New Jersey man was fishing around 3:30 p.m. in waist-deep water at New Smyrna Beach when he was bit by a 5-or 6-foot black tip shark.

Officials said his injuries were non-life-threatening and he was not transported by ambulance.

According to the Florida Museum’s International Shark Bite File, there were 17 shark bites in Volusia County last year.
