‘An ambush in waiting’: Armed man hurt in deputy-involved shooting in Volusia County

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting Thursday night.

It happened in the 100 block of Tanglewood Road in DeBary.

Deputies said the armed subject who was shot is a 54-year-old DeBary man.

The man was wounded but is expected to survive, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

No deputies were injured.

In a tweet, Sheriff Mike Chitwood said he was “thankful that our deputies are going home safe and (is) proud of the way they handled themselves out there.”

Chitwood later tweeted again, calling the situation “an ambush in waiting.”

“Thanks to the training & experience of these deputies, they kept themselves & each other alive, then gave aid to a man who could have killed them. You’ll see for yourself on video tomorrow. Tonight I’m just proud & grateful,” Chitwood tweeted.
