Armed man fatally shot by 4 Volusia County deputies after chase identified

DELTONA, Fla. — A man was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon by Volusia County deputies after a chase ended in Deltona.

The man has been identified as 37-year-old Gregory Howe.

Deputies said DeLand police pulled Howe over for a traffic violation. When asked about his suspended license, he took off and refused to stop.

Volusia deputies said they chased the driver and used several stop sticks during the slow pursuit.

The chase became a slow-speed pursuit with the man driving on his rims when he arrived at his home in Deltona, deputies said.

“He was around the speed limit and there were times -- even when his tires were knocked out that he slowed as he came to an intersection,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood gives an update on the deputy-involved shooting:

Several deputies surrounded his vehicle once he pulled into his driveway and the man pointed what looked like an AK-style rifle out the driver’s window, investigators said.

Chitwood said his deputies are looking into Howe’s recent past, which include two police investigations connected to a recent shooting.

In May, Howe was found with two loaded firearms in his car, one of which may be connected to an Orange City shooting from April 27, when a woman was shot in the chest in Orange City, Chitwood said.

“The description of the shooter and the partial tag that was provided match the suspect in this case,” he said.

Body camera footage and helicopter video of the incident will be released later this week, Chitwood said.

Four deputies opened fire on the man, killing him, deputies said. They are now on unpaid leave which is standard following a deputy-involved shooting.

No deputies were injured, officials said.
