Daytona Beach donation box collects money for homeless

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The city of Daytona Beach is using a donation box to collect money for the homeless.

The city installed it last year and said the money goes to support its four different homeless initiatives to cut down on panhandling.

Orlando installed a box and had it for about seven years. The city scrapped the concept last year after it raised less than $500.

The one in Daytona has already surpassed the Orlando one in its first year.

Records from the city show the box has collected more than $588 since it was installed.

Many people told Channel 9′s Mike Springer that they liked the concept, but thought the city should do more to promote it to make people aware of what it is.

The city has not decided which programs the money will go to just yet.
