DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The city of Daytona Beach is considering creating a citizen’s review board to monitor and study possible cases of police use of force.
It would be the first board of its kind in Volusia or Flagler counties.
The Daytona Beach City Commission debated creating the board in a meeting Wednesday night.

“There’s a lot of power that comes with the gun, the stick, the badge, the spray. There’s a lot of responsibility,” City Commissioner Paula Reed said.
The proposal would create a seven member board to review completed use-of-force cases and could send its recommendations to the city manager if it disagrees with the initial findings.
Pedro Dash, the co-chair of FAITH, a nonprofit organization made up of 30 different congregations, said the board needs firing power to be effective.
“We have to be careful that we do it right. There is some teeth in the board, and it is not just handpicked people that rubber stamp everything that happens,” Dash said.
The city is expected to hear a revised version of the proposal at its meeting next month.
