VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Beach season is here.
Thousands headed to the shore this Memorial Day in Volusia County to enjoy the long weekend.
Beachgoers could pick any spot along the coast if they got there by 9 a.m. But by around 10 a.m., things quickly began to fill up. And it stayed packed along the beach all day.

Overall, thousands packed up their umbrellas and coolers to enjoy Volusia County’s 47 miles of beach.
“This is normal, honestly,” Orlando resident Kristina Aniceto said. “It hasn’t really changed that much.”
The tide has also been high most of the day, leaving less beach for people to set up.

Some lifeguards wave their flags to call some swimmers back who went out too far.
Almost every available lifeguard and beach safety officer worked over the holiday weekend.
“Everybody that’s available to work is working,” said Tammy Malphurs, a captain with Volusia Beach Safety.”

Lifeguards have rescued more than 50 people out of the water in Volusia County since Friday.
