VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The mayor of Deltona is asking for a public apology from the chair of the Volusia County School Board.

Mayor Santiago Avila is unhappy about a comment critical of students at Deltona High School.
Chair Jessie Thompson made those comments at a summit in Washington, D.C.

“I’ve met some bright students, and I’ve met some students I would not trust filling my tank of gas. So, I find it really hard to believe that they graduated,” she said.
The mayor wants residents to ask the board to remove Thompson as school board chair.
