Volusia County reverses course on cutting arts and culture funding

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County Council members have reversed their decision to cut hundreds of thousands of dollars in arts and culture funding.

The 6-0 vote in favor of continuing the funding came after hours of comment and outrage from the county’s arts community.

There were passionate pleas from several arts and culture groups in the county, fighting for their funding to save their programs. Now, they will continue receiving their portion of $611,000 in funding.

They were outraged that this topic was even being discussed.

DeLand and New Smyrna Beach’s mayors also showed up and spoke up against cutting the funding.

Though council members voted in favor to keep as it, they also said they want to see a few changes going forward.
