VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County officials will hear a presentation about using biorock technology to help create seagrass and oyster beds to try and offset some of the issues Indian River Lagoon is experiencing.

The technology has been used successfully in other spots.

Those familiar with the land said the water has become murky; the fish are less plentiful due to pollution and overfishing has lead to more red tides, fish and manatee deaths.
“Harmful algae blooms have caused light reduction and catastrophic loss of seagrasses, which has led to the critical issues,” scientist Brian LaPointe said.

He said this could be done relatively inexpensively compared to something like a seawall, but the exact cost is not known at this time.
