VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Leaders in Volusia County have decided not to pass a moratorium on new development.

Council members discussed the issue for roughly 8 hours on Tuesday.
Dozens of people signed up to speak on the matter at the County Council meeting.

Many supported the idea, while others were concerned about its impact to businesses and construction workers.
Instigated by ongoing flooding concerns, the moratorium was being considered for all areas of unincorporated Volusia County.
The city of Edgewater recently enacted a one year moratorium on new construction.

Councilman Troy Kent proposed a series of ideas to address flooding, including stopping construction on wetlands and clearing city and county canals.
The County Council is expected to discuss those ideas at a meeting on Feb. 11.
