LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A Lake County jury found Vickie Williams guilty on both counts of first-degree murder Tuesday in the killings of an elderly Mount Dora couple.
Williams was convicted in the deaths of Darryl and Sharon Getman, who were killed inside their home at the Waterman Village retirement community on New Year’s Eve 2022.
The verdict followed more than a week of testimony and closing arguments Tuesday.
The central question at trial was not whether Williams killed the couple, but whether she was legally insane at the time of the murders.
Jury rejects insanity defense
Williams’ defense attorneys argued she suffered from severe mental illness and did not understand that what she was doing was wrong.
A defense psychiatrist testified Monday that Williams suffers from severe schizophrenia and believed she was involved in a larger event at the time of the killings.
Prosecutors acknowledged Williams had mental health issues but argued that her actions before and after the killings showed she understood right from wrong.
They pointed to body camera video showing Williams interacting with security personnel before the murders and argued her subsequent actions demonstrated an awareness that she had committed a crime.
Couple killed on New Year’s Eve
Darryl Getman, 83, and Sharon Getman, 80, were killed on Dec. 31, 2022.
Investigators said Williams had been knocking on doors and asking people to let her inside homes at the retirement community before the killings.
Prosecutors said Williams later tried to clean up, showered, took jewelry belonging to the victims and fled in their vehicle.
Williams was later located in Georgia and returned to Lake County.
