ULA launches Atlas V rocket from Space Coast

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — An Atlas V rocket carrying a series of advanced weather satellites lifted off from Cape Canaveral Tuesday afternoon.

The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite Program (GOES) is a joint effort of NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The satellites, called “GOES-T,” will provide NASA and NOAA with continuous imagery and atmospheric measurements of Earth’s Western Hemisphere.

This was the third launch of a GOES series satellite aboard a ULA Atlas rocket.

Once deployed, the satellites will stay in a fixed orbit roughly 22,000 miles over Hawaii and track storms as they move across the country.
