ORLANDO, Fla. — Students at the University of Central Florida are getting cut off from accessing TikTok on campus.

The Florida Board of Governors issued an emergency regulation to block the app at several public universities due to these security concerns.
Other social media apps will also be banned from their networks, including WeChat, Kaspersky, VKontakte and Tencent QQ.

Officials said this is being done due to the possibility that “foreign governments may use certain social media apps, websites and platforms to collect user data and personal identifiers; exert influence over the recommendation algorithm; and compromise devices.”
UCF officials said it will block access to the apps, websites and platforms “deemed to threaten privacy and data security.”

Officials said the apps must also be deleted from any university-owned devices, including computers tablets and phones.
“Data privacy and security are priorities for UCF, and we appreciate you doing your part to protect both your personal and university-related data. We also strongly recommend anyone with these apps delete them from their personal devices,” UCF officials said.
