VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A 78-year-old Mount Dora man who was suffering a medical episode Thursday afternoon struck two people on New Smyrna Beach, Volusia County Beach Safety said.

The driver veered out of the traffic lane at a low speed and hit a 44-year-old woman from Montreal, Canada, and a 35-year-old Oviedo man at about 1:15 p.m., Volusia County Capt. Andrew Ethridge said.

The man and the woman were taken to Halifax Health Medical Center to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Ethridge said. The driver was uninjured.

"His vehicle was stopped by a passenger within his car in conjunction with a nearby pedestrian who reached into the vehicle to shift it into park," Ethridge said.

Charges are pending the completion of a crash investigation, officials said.

The identities of those involved haven't been publicly disclosed.

No other details were given.
