Driver flees after fatally striking homeless man in Union Park

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol troopers were investigating a deadly hit-and-run crash early Monday in east Orange County.

The crash happened shortly after 6 a.m. on East Colonial Drive near Dean Road.

Troopers said a homeless man was not in a crosswalk while trying to cross East Colonial Drive.

They said that he was hit by a vehicle and died at the crash scene.

Witnesses told investigators that the driver fled the scene in a red SUV.

Troopers said they are searching for a vehicle with damage to the front bumper and right passenger side mirror.

The driver was possibly behind the wheel of a maroon Acura TL or MDX, possibly between 2007 to 2010. See images of those vehicle types above.

Nearby business owners who knew the victim said that he had been staying in the area since at least Christmas.

They told Channel 9 that they would often give him food and water.
