ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The ex-husband of professional boxer Christy Martin was found guilty of attempted murder Friday in Orange County.
Christy Martin, who now goes by her maiden name of Salters, said she went fist to fist in November 2010 with her ex-husband, James Martin, and it was unlike any fight in her professional boxing career.
In the case, Martin was charged with attempted murder. On Friday, jurors deliberated and came back with a guilty verdict on all counts. Defense attorneys asked for a delay in sentencing and were given 60 days. Martin's next court appearance is set for June 26.
Martin was found guilty of stabbing and shooting his wife because she planned to leave him for a woman.
"Let's talk about the biggest fight in Christy Martin's life. It wasn't in a ring, but in her own house of horrors," said Assistant State Attorney Ryan Vescio.
The house was on Foxtree Trail near Apopka, and the date was Nov. 23, 2010, when the incident happened.
It was a day after Salters met with a woman she'd known since high school. The women were renewing an old romance and Salters made no secret of her plan to leave her husband of nearly 20 years.
