School closures

ORLANDO, Fla. — As Hurricane Milton passes by Florida, some districts have announced school closures on Sunday.

Brevard County

Update:

Brevard Public Schools announced that schools and offices will remain closed on Friday, Oct. 11.

Original:

Due to Hurricane Milton, all Brevard Public Schools and offices will be closed on Wednesday, 10/09, and Thursday, 10/10.

At this time, all schools are expected to be open tomorrow, Monday, 10/07, and Tuesday, 10/08. Schools are also expected to be open on Friday, 10/11.

As the storm moves closer, a more detailed forecast will be made available. We will update families if anything changes.

The district will continue to work collaboratively with Brevard County Emergency Operations and other local agencies to monitor the storm’s progress and determine the best course of action for the safety of our students, staff, and families.

Flagler County

The Flagler County School District said schools will be closed from Wednesday, Oct. 9, through Friday, Oct. 11.

The school district canceled outdoor activities on Tuesday afternoon. However, Extended Day will be open on Tuesday.

All activities will be canceled on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and Thursday, Oct. 10.

Lake County

Update:

Lake County schools will be closed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Update:

Lake County schools will be open on Tuesday, Oct. 8, and closed on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and Thursday, Oct. 10.

All after-school activities for Tuesday, Oct. 8 are canceled with the exception of ELC, which will remain open until normal closing hours.

Marion County

Marion County Public Schools said the district would close on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and Thursday, Oct. 10.

All extracurricular activities on Thursday are canceled, except Marion Afterschool Programs, which will operate as usual.

Westport High School will open as a special needs shelter at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8. MCPS said small pets with proper documentation are also allowed into the shelter.

Vanguard High School will open as a pet-friendly shelter.

Fort McCoy School will open as a general population shelter.

Orange County

Orange County Public Schools said all after-school activities will be canceled beginning Tuesday, Oct. 8 with the exception of after-school childcare.

All schools and facilities will be closed on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and Thursday, Oct. 10.

Osceola County

Update:

Osceola County School District said all public schools will be closed from Wednesday through Friday.

Update:

All Osecola County public schools will be closed from Tuesday through Thursday.

Update:

All Osecola County public schools will be closed on both Wednesday and Thursday.

Osceola County School District said activities, events, and athletics at all schools would operate normally on Monday, Oct. 7, but will be canceled for Tuesday, Oct. 8.

OCSD said the school would be in session on Monday, Oct. 7, and Tuesday, Oct. 8.

The school boards announced Wednesday, Oct. 9, that all Osceola County School District schools and operations will be closed.

Seminole County

Update:

Seminole County Public Schools will now be closed Wednesday through Friday. Monday, Oct. 14, is a previously scheduled student holiday.

SCPS said that it is anticipating school to resume for students on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Seminole County Public Schools will follow a regular early dismissal schedule on Tuesday, Oct 8. and all afterschool activities, events, facility rentals, and childcare services including KidZone & Beyond and 21st Century Learning programs will be canceled.

All Seminole County Public Schools will be closed on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and Thursday, Oct. 10.

Sumter County

Update:

Sumter County schools will be closed on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The Sumter School District Schools said it would be closed on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and Friday, Oct. 11.

The school district said Friday’s status will depend on weather conditions and community status.

Volusia County

Update:

Volusia County Schools announces early release Tuesday.

All after-school activities, except Extended Day Enrichment Programs, will be canceled on Tuesday.

Officials said schools will be closed on Wednesday, Oct. 8, and Thursday, Oct 10.

Colleges & universities

Florida A&M University

Due to the forecasted rapid intensification of Hurricane Milton, the following schedule changes will apply to ensure the safety of all students, faculty, and staff:

  • Monday, Oct. 7: All classes will be conducted online or through virtual assignments. All in-person events and campus activities are postponed to a later date.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 8: All classes are canceled, and all events and campus activities are postponed later.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 9: All classes are canceled, and all events and campus activities are postponed later.
  • Thursday, Oct. 10: Classes will resume online/virtually, with all assignments available online. In-person events and campus activities will remain postponed.

AdventHealth University

AdventHealth University is closing its Orlando campus from Tuesday, Oct. 8, to Thursday Oct. 10.

Rasmussen University Florida

The university said Tuesday, Oct. 8., students should also expect to shift to online courses where possible. On Wednesday, Oct. 9, all Florida campuses will be closed, and all classes will be canceled as the storm moves through.

Full Sail University

The University said the campus will be closed from Tuesday, Oct. 8, through Thursday, Oct. 10.

On Tuesday, Oct. 8, campus and labs will move to remote operations via Zoom, with potential rescheduling for select campus labs.

Polk State College

Polk State College will be closed Tuesday, Oct. 8 through Thursday, Oct. 10.

Florida Gulf Coast University

The university is closing all campuses to all activities and operations, including all events and classes, on Tuesday, Oct 8, and will remain closed through Friday, Oct. 11.

University of South Florida

All Campus will be closed on Monday, Oct. 7.

All classes are canceled, and all campuses will be closed on Tuesday, Oct. 8, and Wednesday, Oct. 9.

University of Florida

The university said the campus will close on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and Thursday, Oct. 10, and classes will be canceled.

Valencia College

The college said it will be closed Tuesday through Thursday.

All in-person and online classes during that time will be canceled, officials said.

Monday classes will continue as scheduled.

University of Central Florida

Update:

UCF said all classes and campus operations are now suspended Tuesday through Friday.

Due to Hurricane Milton, UCF will suspend campus operations and all classes Tuesday through Thursday.

Florida Institute of Technology

Hurricane Milton advisory: Florida Tech has cancelled all classes from Tuesday, Oct. 8 through Friday, Oct. 11.

University offices will remain open until noon on Tuesday, Oct. 8, and will then be closed for the remainder of the week.

Rollins College

The college said it would close the campus and evacuate.

All in-person classes and events are canceled this week, Monday, Oct. 7, through Oct. 11.

The campus will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, except for emergency essential staff.

Stetson University

Given the storm’s intensity, Stetson will extend the closure of the DeLand campus beginning Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m. through Friday, Oct. 11.

A decision on when to reopen residential facilities and campus dining will be made after the storm passes Thursday morning and campus conditions can be assessed.

At this time, students needing accommodations can be placed with volunteer hosts, including faculty, staff and alumni. Thank you to the members of our community who have generously agreed to host students who must evacuate.

Bethune-Cookman University

Due to the threat of Hurricane Milton, Bethune-Cookman University will be closed from Tuesday, October 8 until further notice. A return date will be determined once conditions are deemed safe.

Students have been informed to evacuate campus or make arrangements with Residence Life for placement as well as notify their parents or guardians.

As always, we want to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, and staff.

We urge the campus community and constituents to monitor local weather reports. Please exercise good judgment in making travel decisions. The University will continue to monitor weather conditions, and any change of status will be announced via the emergency alert system, cookman.edu, and social media channels.
