Titusville Water Resources Director Sean Stauffer says the tower has been offline for more than two years.

“Because of improvements we have made at the Armstrong pumping station, the tower is no longer needed to provide pressure to our distribution system,” Stauffer said in a statement.

The city considered the costs of repairing the tower to be an “unnecessary expense” and calculated that it would cost less to dismantle it.

The demolition of the tank started Monday and is expected to take about two weeks to complete.

The process is not expected to block traffic or impact service for Titusville water customers.

The metal from the tower will be recycled by the contractor.
