PINE HILLS, Fla. — A woman charged with first-degree murder after a 3-year-old died at an apartment complex faced a judge Sunday morning.

Callene Barton, 58, was denied bail for her charges of murder and aggravated child abuse in the death of Xavier Mokarzel-Satchel.

Deputies arrested Barton and 28-year-old Lakesha Lewis, who also faces a first-degree murder charge, Friday after finding the 3-year-old unresponsive in a unit at the Eagle Landing apartment complex on Silver Star road.

Deputies also arrested the boy’s mother, Brandi Mokarzel, on an aggravated child neglect charge. A judge had questions for the prosecution about the probable cause used to make the arrest during a hearing Saturday.

Mokarzel will appear before a judge again Monday for the prosecution to answer those questions.

Jaquan Satchel, the boy’s father, said he’s having a difficult time processing what happened.

"I don't know, I'm completely blank. I've done all the crying; I've done all the screaming,” he said.

Satchel lives in Washington state. He said he had been in the process of trying to hire a family lawyer to get partial custody of his son.

"I guess it wasn't soon enough,” he said.
