Teacher vacancies: Breaking down the openings at Central Florida schools

At Stetson University, Dr. Rajni Shankar-Brown is getting ready for another school year doing what she loves most: education.

But getting young people on that same path is becoming more challenging, and “a lot” of students majoring in education then decide it isn’t for them.

And teacher vacancies across Central Florida are piling up.

Orange County School District said it currently has a vacancy rate of 2.96%, compared to a vacancy rate of 2.28% this time last year, and need 426 instructional staff among others. The district also said it has 84 teachers in the pipeline to be hired.

Seminole County School District needs 17 elementary school teachers, 12 middle school teachers and 12 high school teachers.

Brevard County School District said it needs 194 teachers.

Lake County School District needs 103 teachers.
