Suspect, cops identified in Casselberry shooting that injured two officers

CASSELBERRY, Fla. — Casselberry police have released the names of the suspect and officers involved in a shooting that left a man dead on Saturday.

Officers were called to a home on Crestview Drive north of Seminola Boulevard and North Winter Park Road shortly before 4 a.m. after a couple got into an argument, Chief Larry Krantz said.

When officers arrived at the home, 65 year-old James Lee Parran fired a shotgun toward them, Krantz said.

Several officers returned fire. Those officers have been identified as Cpl. Robert Judges, Cpl. Adam Phillips, Ryan McIntosh and Robert Blackwell.

Krantz said Phillips, a 6-year veteran of the department, received the most wounds, with shots to his arm, face and ballistic vest. The police chief said the wounds were superficial.

"So the vest did prevent additional injury from occurring to Officer Phillips," Krantz said.

Officer McIntosh also received minor injuries from the shooting, according to Krantz.

Once backup arrived, Krantz said a SWAT team barged into the home, where they found Parran dead from a gunshot wound.

It's unknown if Parran was struck by officers' gunfire, or if the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, police said.

Phillilps and McIntosh  were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, but they've since been released, Krantz said.

Investigators said Parran's wife was later located with relatives.

Police evacuated about a dozen people from neighboring homes to a nearby school gymnasium, but they've since been allowed to return to their homes.

Resident Robert Galluzzo said he was awoken by the sound of the commotion.

“I woke up, my dogs were barking, it sounded like a knock on the door,” he said. “So I came to the front door and immediately heard about a dozen to 20 shots.”

Galluzzo said he saw about two dozen police officers descend upon his neighbor’s home.

"I moved from Pine Hills because there was two drive-bys across the street," he said. "Florida's a crazy place."

Krantz commended the response from the police officers and other agencies that rushed to the scene.

"My officers acted admirably when faced with this type of situation," he said. "The officers that responded from all the jurisdictions did an outstanding job safeguarding the community."

Neither the armed man nor the officers were publicly identified.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
