ORLANDO, Fla. — A survey shows that Central Florida residents have two major concerns about downtown Orlando.

The survey comes at the heels of the city proposing two new ordinances to make downtown Orlando safer.

The proposals include a moratorium on new nightclubs and an additional permit with more requirements for businesses selling alcohol after midnight.

The City District Downtown Business Group conducted an online survey last month, and received more than 1,700 responses from business owners and residents to the survey that gives some perspective on how safe people feel, and what their concerns are.

When asked how safe people feel in downtown, 80% of those surveyed said they feel safe or very safe during the day, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

But from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., 83% said they felt unsafe, or very unsafe.

The survey asked people what they feel is hindering economic growth downtown. The top answers were “safety” at 24%, and “residents experiencing homelessness” at 22%.

The group that oversaw the survey wanted results to be available before the second reading of the ordinance related to the late-night alcohol sales, which is expected later this month.
