Surveillance video helps catch teens in Apopka armed robbery, carjacking, police say

APOPKA, Fla. — Two 16-year-old boys were behind bars Wednesday after police said they were caught on surveillance video robbing a woman at gunpoint and trying to steal her car.

The boys, Deon Sykes and Byron Redd, are facing numerous charges, including armed robbery, carjacking and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The incident happened Monday when the victim said the two boys approached her in her driveway took her phone and tried to take off in her car, before fleeing the scene on foot, police said.

Neighbor Jeremy Michaels’ surveillance cameras caught the two as they walked past his house.

“They glimpsed into my garage and just kept going,” Michaels said. “So I don’t know if they were looking for that woman.”

An Apopka Police Department detective investigating the robbery noticed the cameras and asked Michaels to see the recording.

One of the suspects was spotted not far from the crime scene and the other was identified through the video, police said.

Michaels was glad he could help track down the alleged robbers but was disappointed to hear it was a pair of teenagers who were arrested.

“It’s sad that young kids like that have to go out and cause mischief in a neighborhood,” he said. “This is a peaceful neighborhood.”
