Video shows former Volusia Co. Jail inmate being beaten by officer

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Channel 9 has obtained video that shows an inmate being repeatedly punched by a Volusia County officer.

Video shows the officer wrestling and Gary Enckler to the ground and then possibly punching him in February 2012.

Enckler, who said he suffered bruises and a swollen eye, contacted Channel 9 after he said the county didn't take his complaints seriously.

Enckler said the surveillance video is from the Volusia County Jail's clinic, where he was seeking treatment for chest pain.

The former inmate said he had double bypass open heart surgery a few months before his arrest and claims he told jail officials he needed medication. But Enckler claims the jail staff brought him the wrong kind.

"I was in complete shock. What did I do to deserve this?" said Enckler.

A report from the officer who detained Enckler said Enckler later refused to leave the office and then elbowed him when he tried to detain him.

Enckler claimed he didn't want to leave because the medical staff tried to give him the wrong medication for his heart.

"I didn't do nothing to cause that and then it shows him getting on top of me just beating me," said Enckler.

At the time of the incident, the corrections officer stated he was trying to strike Enckler in the shoulder but because Enckler was moving, he accidentally hit him in the face.

"You can't do that and he knew that," said Enckler.

The day after the incident, a supervising lieutenant determined the use of force was justified.

Enckler said he has been working with an attorney for the past 14 months in an attempt to seek damages from the county.

Enckler said his arrest at the time was related to forgery in Georgia. Records show he was wanted out of state.

Officials with Volusia County said they will not comment on the matter because potential litigation against the county.
