Surfing Santas to brave frigid cold for annual event Saturday

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — This time of year, in Central Florida, Santa Claus doesn’t just ride atop a sleigh.

He also surfs.

Surfing Santas, a tradition that began in 2009, returns this year, once again drawing thousands of surfing and Christmas enthusiasts from across the planet to the end of Minutemen Causeway in Cocoa Beach.

Surfers will don their best Santa gear as they catch some waves.

The event kicks off at 7:30 a.m. with an invocation and performance of the classic Hawaiian Christmas song “Mele Kalikimaka.”

The Surfing Santas will catch waves beginning at 10 a.m., with a photo op at 9:30 a.m.

There will also be Hawaiian dancers, costume contests, a raffle drawing and more.

Saturday morning is set to be one of the coldest Surfing Santa events in recent memory, with temperatures in the mid-30s when things get started.
