SunRail train takes test runs

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — A SunRail locomotive hit the tracks for its first day of full testing over the weekend.

The engine, pulling two cars, traveled from Sanford to DeLand over the weekend. It reached speeds of 30 mph during the test run.

SunRail officials said the train engine needs to run 2,500 test miles before it is put in full service in the spring.

If that test goes well, the other nine locomotives will only need 500 test miles, according to SunRail officials.

The first phase of SunRail service is expected to begin in the spring with the commuter train running from DeBary in Volusia County to Sand Lake Road in Orange County.

In 2016, phase two is expected to be in operation, expanding the service 61.5 miles, from DeLand in Volusia County to Poinciana in Osceola County.
