The Villages pushes to open housing areas for younger residents

THE VILLAGES, Fla. — There is a push to allow younger people to move into The Villages.

The retirement community has an age restriction of 55 or older, but developers want a special section of The Villages in Leesburg to open for younger people to live.

The developer is calling the areas community support districts as part of the new development here. They want a place for people who work in The Villages to live nearby and for family of the retirees to live close.

Planning and zoning staff and the city’s planning commission both recommend approving this change. But the final decision will be up to city commissioners, who approved the first reading of the proposed change Monday night.

The change will be reviewed in Tallahassee before a final vote is scheduled for Dec. 14.
