Subtropical Storm Don forms in central Atlantic

ORLANDO, Fla. — The National Hurricane Center said a storm system churning in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean is now a named storm.

11:05 a.m. update:

Subtropical Storm Don continues to slowly move through the Central Atlantic.

Don has slightly weakened to maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.

The storm system has also slightly sped up, and is now moving north at 7 mph.

These minor changes have not altered the track of the system, which is still not forecast to impact Florida or the U.S.

Don if projected to weaken as it spins in the open Atlantic into the middle of next week.

Subtropical Storm Don is now the fourth named storm in the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season.

Don is moving north at 6 mph and has estimated maximum wind speeds of 50 mph.

The system is expected to remain in the Central Atlantic over the next few days.

Forecast models show Don is not currently threatening Florida or the U.S.
