Some Florida educators are fighting back against law focused on unions

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Florida Teachers Association says it may announce plans to file a lawsuit, in response to a new law just signed by the governor.

It does things like putting new minimum limits on union membership and changing the way members pay for dues.

Supporters of the bill said it would make unions stronger and opponents say the bill is a direct attack on teachers across the state.

FTA says Senate bill 256, recently signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis, imposes restrictions on public-employee unions, including banning payroll deductions for union dues and requiring a 60% supermajority of eligible employees to pay dues.

Certain unions representing law enforcement officers, correctional officers, and firefighters are exempt from the bill’s provisions.
