MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating a small plane crash in Melbourne on Thursday evening.

Around 7:08 p.m. Melbourne police responded to Rennigers Flea Market located at 4835 West Eau Gallie Boulevard about a plane crash.

When officers arrived, they located a small propellor plane right side up and on its wheels in the parking lot.

A downed high-tension power line was also in the parking lot and stretched across the entrance ramp to southbound Interstate 95, police said.

According to a news release, the initial investigation revealed that the plane suffered a mechanical issue and was attempting to return to the Melbourne Orlando International Airport.

While attempting to return, the aircraft struck the high-tension power lines, stopping in the Rennigers Flea Market parking lot.

The pilot and co-pilot were out of the aircraft and walking around when first responders arrived.
