Sheriff: Florida deputy shot and killed in the line of duty during traffic stop

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — Law enforcement is mourning the death of a Florida deputy who was killed in the line of duty over the weekend.

Charlotte County Deputy Corporal Elio Diaz was shot to death Sunday afternoon during a traffic stop in Southwest Florida.

Authorities said Andrew Mosytn, pulled out a rifle and opened fire on Diaz, killing him.

Mosytn was later shot and killed by law enforcement officers.

They say they were forced to shoot when Mosytn reached for a rifle.

Florida Sen. Rick Scott reacted the corporal’s death on saying:

“Devastated to hear of the passing of a Charlotte County deputy tonight. I spoke with Charlotte County Sheriff Prummell to let him know Ann and I are praying for his team and the deputy’s family tonight. Please keep them in your prayers.”
