Seriously ill girl evacuated from Puerto Rico to Fort Lauderdale for treatment after Hurricane Maria

A young girl was evacuated from Puerto Rico to Fort Lauderdale Friday via a private jet when she couldn’t get the medical care she needed after Hurricane Maria ravaged the island.
“I feel very, very lucky, because I know there are a lot of people suffering right now,” her father Gustavo Sanchez said.
His 2-year-old daughter has a serious medical condition and it quickly became obvious that staying in Puerto Rico was not an option, Sanchez said.
“Having a situation where we needed to get her to a hospital and we didn’t have any fuel,” he said. “We definitely needed to get her there.”
For people urgently needing medical care but can’t find a way out of Puerto Rico, doctors have been going to them in a steady stream.
Chanel 9’s Nancy Alvarez met up with a team of five doctors from Florida Hospital in San Juan, who said they had been busy fixing equipment and seeing patients.
While he was grateful to be getting his daughter the care she needs, Sanchez felt guilty about the family members he had to leave behind to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.
“I’m doing it for the baby, but I feel bad for them,” he said with tears in his eyes.
