Seminole County School Board votes to select Serita Beamon as next superintendent

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — 10:20 p.m. update:

The Seminole County School Board on Monday evening voted 3-2 to select Serita Beamon as the next superintendent.

The decision came after hours of public comment.

In a surprise move last week, the board rescinded its vote to hire Chad Farnsworth, an assistant superintendent with Lake County Schools.

Many members of the Sanford Community spoke up, expressing concerns over the board not hiring longtime school district attorney Serita Beamon.

Beamon makes history as the first African-American woman to lead the school district.

The Seminole County School Board on Monday night is expected to choose the next superintendent.

In a surprise move last week, the board rescinded its vote to hire Chad Farnsworth, an assistant superintendent with Lake County Schools.

Many members of the Sanford Community spoke up, expressing concerns over the board not hiring longtime school district attorney Serita Beamon.

Beamon will be the first African-American woman to lead the school district.

There are 22 emails that came into the board that will be read during public participation.

It’s not known how many people will speak who are planning to be at the board meeting in person.

The district plans to have overflow rooms available.

The Seminole County School Board originally voted 3-2 in favor of Farnsworth.

But then last Monday, a group of about 50 residents from the Sanford area voiced their opposition to the board’s pick.

Ultimately, the board voted 3-2 in favor of rescinding its vote to hire Farnsworth.

On Monday, the board could either revote to hire Farnsworth, vote to hire Beamon or vote to start the search process all over for a superintendent.
