OVIEDO, Fla. — A Seminole County commissioner said mask fatigue is something that must be addressed.
Commissioner Amy Lockhart wants the county to step up and put a timeline together for ditching the mask mandate. Lockhart’s comments even led to a confrontation with other county officials this week.
Seminole County was one of the first in the state to institute a mask order shortly after the pandemic hit.

Lockhart said there needs to be a plan in place to determine what the finish line will look like to end the order.
She said face mask fatigue is setting in. And while she doesn’t believe it’s time to end the mask order altogether, she would like to see what it will take to move the goal post and lift the restrictions.
Seminole County Emergency Manager Alan Harris said the answer for Lockhart and others is not clear.
The county plans to stay the course and will rely on hospitals and medical professionals to determine what to do.
“We have asked that same question where is this line and unfortunately they have said the same thing over and over again, that ‘we continue to learn about this virus, please don’t stop the mitigation efforts that are working right now,’” Harris said.

The county has had 20 deaths from COVID-19 in the last few weeks, which is more than in a regular flu season.
Harris said masks and social distancing are the only thing besides the vaccine fighting this disease.
