Channel 9 has learned that the upgrades for this project aren’t happening on the interstate.

Chances are if you live in the Lake Mary and Sanford area, you are very familiar with this troublesome intersection of Rhinehart Road and CR 46-A.

These roads lead to large subdivisions, major shopping centers, and more within just a few blocks.

Traffic backups are constant, and now the state wants to do something about it.

Close to 45,000 people use the intersection daily, according to FDOT.

The gridlock doesn’t just affect Rhinehart and 46A.

During evening rush hour, it spills onto I-4 eastbound and contributes to long delays for motorists heading into Volusia County.

FDOT says it has a solution.

It wants to increase capacity at the intersection by improving select existing turn lanes and adding new ones.

In the future, turn lanes will be extended on both roads to eliminate merging.

The work is expected to cost about $8 million.

If all goes as planned, it will begin in the fall and winter months.
