SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Seminole County commissioners are on board to move forward with a new tourism improvement district.

The money raised through a hotel fee would go to build a new $61 million indoor sports complex.

Commissioners heard for the first time the details of a tourism study, which shows that sports revenue drives the economy from hotels to restaurants and other local businesses.

About $31 million is pumped in the local economy, from baseball teams who flock to the area across the country to play at Boombah Fields.

Now, they believe they can hit a homerun out of the park by building a new indoor sports arena to bring in tens of millions of dollars more in indoor sporting events, conferences and musical acts.

The complex would also keep Seminole County students in the county for graduation and prom, but the plan hinges on passing a tourism improvement district, which would add a fee onto hotel rooms.

The next step is to finish the study, then to get everyone on board should take about a year.
